Small business website maintenance checklist

A manageable monthly website maintenance checklist covering updates, backups, forms, business details, accessibility, and performance.

A website does not need daily attention to stay useful, but it does need someone to check the important things. A short monthly routine can catch broken forms, outdated details, and neglected software before customers run into them.

Start with the customer journey

Once a month, use your own site as a customer would. Open it on a phone, check the main service pages, tap the phone number, and send a test enquiry. Confirm the message arrived and that the confirmation makes sense.

Check your hours, prices or price guidance, service area, team details, and any seasonal notices. A small outdated detail can create avoidable calls or send a customer to a closed location.

Keep the site safe and recoverable

Know who manages the domain, hosting, website platform, and any important accounts. Use unique passwords and multi-factor authentication where available, and limit access to people who need it. Keep a current backup before making significant changes, and know how to restore it.

Apply platform, plugin, and dependency updates on a regular schedule. For a custom-built site, follow the deployment and dependency process set up by your developer. Updates can change how a site behaves, so check key pages and forms afterwards.

Check readability and performance

Try keyboard navigation through the main menu and forms. Confirm links and buttons have clear labels, images that carry meaning have useful text alternatives, and text remains readable at phone size. These checks help more people use your site and often reveal basic usability problems.

Notice pages or images that feel slow, especially on a mobile connection. Resize oversized photos before uploading and remove tools or widgets that no longer serve a clear purpose. Avoid changing several performance settings at once if you cannot easily undo them.

Keep a short record

Write down the date, what you checked, and what you changed. Save copies of important text and images so it is easier to recover from a mistake. If you rely on online booking or payment tools, check their status and confirm the connection still works.

If maintenance keeps sliding down your list, arrange a support plan with your website partner. Siteful offers ongoing website support for businesses that want a hand with updates and improvements.
